She\u00a0has published a wide range of work in US and international publications, from highly textured abstract photographs to investigative reporting and travel essays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Photography has always been entwined in her career, and in recent years has become her primary medium of personal expression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lisa maintains an exhibit space at Full Circle Solutions in downtown Jasper, Georgia. She is a board member and web site editor of the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pickens Arts and Cultural Alliance<\/span>, and is a member of\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sharptop Arts Association<\/span> in Jasper,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mountain Arts Association<\/span> of Hiawassee and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Big Canoe Artists Group<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Training journalists in emerging democracies has been a major part of her work since 1991. Lisa has conducted workshops, coached and mentored hundreds of individuals in 20 countries on every aspect of written and visual journalism, and lived in Afghanistan, China, Dubai, Fiji, and Timor-Leste. She also backpacked solo in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In Afghanistan,\u00a0Lisa was a founder and continues to act as an adviser to Pajhwok Afghan News, a national Afghan-owned news agency (<a href=\"http:\/\/pajhwok.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pajhwok.com<\/span><\/a>). Pajhwok grew from a small project which trained Afghans who had no previous experience in independent media, to a well-known news agency of more than 130 Afghan staff who cover the entire country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lisa\u2019s work overseas makes her very aware of how our perception of people and places in the news can be distorted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cPeople in the U.S. only see the war, corruption, and religious extremism. There is much more happening in Afghanistan\u2019s daily life,\u201d Lisa says. \u201cI want to take Americans into those nooks and crannies that are unexplored in news reports.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Coupled with her education of Americans is a personal effort to help educate Afghan girls. Since 2003, Lisa has raised funds to build and support\u00a0a girls\u2019 school in a village southeast of Kabul.\u00a0\u00a0In the past year this project added a library and Lisa is now raising money to finish furnishing it and filling the shelves.\u00a0Lisa sells handmade scarves, soaps, purses and other handicrafts made in Afghanistan and donates all the proceeds to the girls\u2019 school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The belief in information and education is key to this exhibit. \u201cWe feel our work is essential to democracy \u2013 for Americans and Afghans \u2013 so that citizens can make informed decisions,\u201d Lisa says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lisa earned a Bachelor\u2019s degree in journalism from Kent State University (Ohio) and Master\u2019s degree in International Studies from the University of Washington.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A View from the Ground Lisa Schnellinger\u2019s 30-year career has taken her across continents as a writer, photographer, and journalism trainer.
